I am a metalsmith. I make one of a kind, larger than life, highly detailed metal insects.
Each complex, nature perfect sculpture contains treasure in a hidden cavity and
incorporates gold, silver, copper and gemstones in its construction.
My fascination with nature in general and with insects in particular began while I was a child growing up on a farm in southwestern Ontario.
The work that I do reflects the influence of that environment — the wildlife and the insects, as well the intricacy, the complexity and the order inherent in nature. I am drawn to the beauty, but also to the danger in nature. I relish the visible, yet can imagine much more; which gives rise to the construction of secret spaces containing their treasures that I create within each piece.
Over time, I have explored various materials in the construction of my work, ranging from papier mache to wood to polymer clay to ceramic to metal, to a combination of all of the above.
In the past few years, I have found that working in metal, while a distinct challenge in terms of design and fabrication, achieves the look and feeling that I want. |
