BIO
Elizabeth Goluch grew up on a farm near the village of Fingal in Southwestern Ontario. She attended the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1976. After spending a decade in Toronto, she returned to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Upon her return, Elizabeth began her education in metalsmithing with Shirley Fader and Don Bell in Halifax. She has studied with Lisa Gralnick, David Pimentel, Michael Croft and Chris Darway at the Haystack School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine; and has participated in workshops in Halifax with Ayelet Stewart, Anne Larsen Hollerbach and Arline Fisch.
She is a member of the Metal Arts Guild of Nova Scotia and has held the office of President and Secretary. She has been named Best in Show in numerous M.A.G.N.S. competitions and won the coveted Frank Phillips Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship in 2006. She sits on the Standards Committee of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council and on the Exhibition Review Committee of the Mary E. Black Gallery in Halifax. Her sculpture, Cicada (I’ll Sing in the Sunshine) was shortlisted for the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award in 2007.
Her work can be found in both public and private collections worldwide.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am a metalsmith. I create one of a kind, larger than life, highly detailed metal insects. Each complex, nature perfect sculpture incorporates gold, silver, enamel and gemstones in its construction.
The works reflect the intricacy, the complexity and the order inherent in nature. I relish the visible, yet can imagine much more; which gives rise to the construction of secret spaces containing their treasure that I create within each piece. The decorative details reveal another layer of information, evoking elements of insect life, lore and environment.
Over time, I have explored various materials in the construction of my work, ranging from papier mache to wood to polymer clay to ceramic to metal, to a combination of all of the above.
In the past few years, I have found that working in metal, while a distinct challenge in terms of design and fabrication, achieves the look and feeling that I want.
